This Day, 16 Years Ago
Here's a slide by David Stowe from June 26, 1994. It features CN 3578 on point with fellow MLW unit 2307 and SD40 5071 trailing. The slide was taken in Hamilton, Ontario.
Strangely enough, 3578 was the newest of the three units shown. CN 3578 was an M-420(W). It was originally built as CN 2578 in 1976, but along with many M-420s it was renumbered to the 35xx series when it had its weight and fuel reduced for branchline service. CN 3578 found a new life on the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad in 1998, then was sold to the Southern Railroad of New Jersey in 2003 (CN Lines web page). There is a photo of it here showing it with SRNJ lettering but still in CN stripes.
CN 2307 suffered a worse fate. It was an older unit, an M-636 built in 1970. It was retired on January 31, 1995 and scrapped just over a year later.
CN 5071 was an SD40 built in 1968. It was retired on November 27, 1998 and was sold to National Railway Equipment. It is apparently still in operation today, in Union Pacific colours.

Another blast from the past! This slide shows CP 5661 and CP 474x rolling through London, Ontario and was taken by David T Stowe. CP 5661 definitely looks like it could have used a new paint job.

This was quite a lashup. Shiny CP 5405 was on the point, with worn SOO 6616 in the middle and MLW M-636 CP 4701 trailing. Note the lack of a multimark on 5405, compared to the "Pacman" on 4701. I always liked the white SOO paint scheme. The slide was taken in London, Ontario by David T Stowe.
CP 5405 was an SD40 built as QNSL 209 for the Quebec, North Shore & Labrador railway in 1971. She was leased to CP in 1983 and purchased in 1985. This photo shows her in September 1987 with a multimark, so sometime between then and November 1990 she was repainted and lost the multimark. CP Roster.
SOO 6616 was built in March 1981 as an SD40-2. Sometime between 1986 and 1991, she was repainted into a different scheme, the red SOO scheme with white stripes (see here). As of 2003 she was still operating.
CP 4701 was built in 1969 by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) and was an M-636.

Slides for Sale
This shot was taken on this day, 11 years ago in 1998, by a David T. Stowe in Bathurst, NB.

I recently purchased a few slides from Tim Howerter. He has a large collection of original slides for sale. There are a variety of railways represented, including CN, CP, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and a large switcher collection. His prices are quite reasonable and so is the shipping.
I purchased about a dozen slides featuring MLW power on CP and CN.
Here is his sales listing from Railbid. His email address is dozermand6 a t rcn.com. (Replace a t with the @ sign)
Here is my updated list of original train slides for sale. The link below will take you directly to all of the folders with all slides for sale.

There were many slides added to the switchers folders and others. Please take some time and view what I have for sale. All slides are originals, no duplicates. All slides were scanned at a low resolution, hence the fair quality of the scans. All slides have info, dates and location on slide mounts. The words you see on the scans do not appear on the slide itself. Email me back the folder name and the slides(file) numbers back to me of the ones you want to purchase.
Prices:
All action slides of trains are $1.50 each. All locomotive roster shots are $2.00 each
Shipping:
Slides are shipped First class mail and cost is $1.25 for the first 5 slides, $.50 for each additional 5 slides purchased.
I will accept cash, check or money order, or you may use paypal, but will have to pay the fee I am charged for accepting paypal payments which is 3%, + $.30 of total amount due(shipping costs included). I am sorry I have to charge this but if I do not this adds up to a large loss for me.
Hope to hear from you!
Thanks
Tim
