Railfan Safety Guide

Railfans at Aulac, NB

Operation Lifesaver has prepared a railfan safety guide. Have a look and see what you think. I think it is mostly common sense and makes some good points... especially about setting a good example.

Any comments on it? Things that should be changed? Added? Deleted?

Interesting railfan safety guide, Steve. I was a little puzzled by the "avoid taking pictures of military equipment"; sounded vaguely American.

I was pleased to read the part about posing small children on railway tracks for family photos. Now, we had plenty of that when we were small, mainly on fantrips with NON-MOVING equipment. Even three days ago I saw a photographer taking photos on our nearby Cataraqui Spur. A trendy photo backdrop to be sure, but indeed sends the wrong message.

The railfans in your post photo appear to be a very safe distance away from the right-of-way.

I agree, Eric, the military part did sound American. Personally I don't see any problem with taking photos of military equipment from a public place.

These railfans were at Aulac on the NB-NS border, and were indeed a good distance back from the tracks. The trains go at a good clip here so a lot of distance is needed to be safe.
